Frequently asked questions

What does a calibration certificate need to include?

An auditor expects to find: which instrument was calibrated (a control number at minimum, plus serial or asset numbers), when it was calibrated and when it is next due, the result — ideally both as-found and as-left, the reference standards used with their own certificate numbers, measurement uncertainty where relevant, who performed the calibration, and a signed statement. This generator covers all of it; only the essentials are required fields.

What is the difference between as-found and as-left?

As-found is how the instrument measured when it came in — before any adjustment. It answers the question that matters looking backwards: could you trust the measurements taken since the last calibration? If as-found is out of tolerance, ISO 9001 (7.1.5.2) expects you to assess the validity of previous measuring results. As-left is how the instrument measured going back out, after any adjustment — the new baseline the next calibration is judged against. If nothing was adjusted, as-found and as-left are identical, and both are still recorded.

What is measurement traceability?

Traceability is an unbroken chain of calibrations linking your instrument to a national metrology institute such as NIST, PTB or Justervesenet. Every link in the chain has its own certificate and its own uncertainty. On your certificate, the link is the reference standard you calibrated against and that standard's certificate number — which is why this generator asks for both.

Is this certificate generator really free?

Yes. No account, no email required, no paywall — and your own logo on the certificate without a surcharge. Gaugelog makes calibration management software; this tool is free because generating one certificate well is the easy part. Remembering every instrument, due date and certificate is what the product does.

Does my data get uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is generated entirely in your browser — the form contents and your logo are never sent to a server. A draft of the form is kept in your browser's local storage so a refresh doesn't lose your work; the logo is held in memory only.
