- Measure the manufacturer's moisture content standard (MCS) or sensor block and record the as-found reading against the nominal value
- For laboratory calibration per ASTM D4444, measure prepared wood specimens spanning the working moisture range
- Determine the true moisture content of the same specimens by oven-drying per ASTM D4442
- Compare meter readings to the oven-dry values and classify the meter as validated, marginal, or out of tolerance against the manufacturer accuracy specification
- Verify species and temperature correction settings behave as specified
- Record as-found and as-left results; adjust or return the meter to the factory if it cannot be brought within tolerance
